November from the Pastor

This month I want to talk to you about a favorite verse of so many. John 3:16, a verse that is worthy of a tense discussion……a verb tense discussion. Our Lord said “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” This verse can be separated into two distinct parts: the facts and the conditional statement.
The problem you and I have seen in so many lives is they have a basic misunderstanding of which part is established fact and which part is conditional. They walk around in fear of losing God’s love or dejection because they believe they are not somehow, worthy of it. This mistake leads to a fear and despair that should be foreign to the people of God, but sadly is all too real for many.
Here is the truth: the first two verbs are in the past tense, the next part is what is conditional. But, God’s love and his gift of Jesus the Messiah are not conditional. There is nothing, NOTHING, you can do where God will say, “I take it back, you are not worthy of my love and gift.” No! God loving you and his offering to you Christ is done, finished, established fact.
Actually, Scripture tells us the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. There is nothing you can do or say that will make God stop loving you. There is nothing you can say or do where he will stop offering you grace. His love and His gift are not conditional, they are established eternal, unbreakable fact. God loves you and there is nothing you can do about that.
What is conditional is our response. God offers His love and His grace in Christ Jesus continually and won’t stop. But just as any gift we get to choose whether we want it or not. God’s love is unconditional, our response is conditional. If we believe (present tense) then we will not perish but have everlasting life (Future).
